If you’re a Cape Cod homeowner who stays in your home during the winter, or if you’re a summer homeowner who wants to make sure your house looks beautiful when you come back, then read on! These five tips will help you achieve just that. Happy decorating!
1. Add evergreen wreaths to your front door and windows
The evergreen wreath is a classic front door decoration that appears worldwide, even in regions without evergreen trees. How much more appropriate is an evergreen wreath on the front door of a Cape Cod home? These wreaths are surprisingly easy to make yourself, especially as the raw materials are all within a short walk of most Cape Cod homes.
2. Hang garland around your porch and railings
You don’t need to buy expensive material to create a gorgeous porch and railing display. A simple evergreen tree branch draped over a front porch railing is an attractive addition to the front of your Cape Cod home. The downside to living tree material is that the needles will fall off and eventually become discolored. You can very easily replace these with artifical sprigs from the Christmas Tree Shop or similar stores. Alternatively, you can ask your home watch provider to spruce it up (see what we did there?)
3. Drape a festive blanket or quilt over your furniture on the porch
This is one of my favorite tips. The key to a successful look is choosing a blanket or quilt made of durable material that will endure rain, snow, and of course wind. The latter is the most significant problem; in our experience, some of the heaviest outdoor furniture at our clients’ homes has been overturned in a hurricaine or nor’easter. The key is to create the furniture + drape in a covered porch area that is protected from the elements to the greatest degree possible. Failing that, your home watch provider can ensure that your blankets and quilts remain in place.
4. String Christmas lights around your home, including in the trees
The annual ritual of stringing Christmas lights is the bane of existence of many a Cape Cod homeowner. However, the results can be so stunning that your efforts are rewarded. Less is more, especially on Cape Cod. Go for simplicity and elegance rather than excess and splash.
5. Keep your sidewalks and driveway cleared of snow and ice
There are a couple of reasons to keep your driveway and sidewalks clear during the winter, even if you will not be there. First, the property will look much more beautiful! Second, pedestrians will be able to walk on the sidewalk and not the street. Third, visitors to your home will enjoy easy and safe access. Finally, and perhaps most important, snow removal will slow weather-related damage to the pavement and tarmac and will extend the life of these surfaces. If you will not be at home, your home watch provider can arrange snow removal.
