How to Keep Your Car Clean on Cape Cod | Liberty Siqueira

If you’re like most people who own a car on Cape Cod, you know that keeping it clean can be a challenge. With the constant exposure to salty air and sand, many vehicles quickly become dirty and challenging to clean. But with a few simple tips, you can keep your car looking great all season long. Here are three of our favorites.

Keep your car covered when possible

You don’t need to own a luxury car to consider covering it during the summer on Cape Cod. A car cover will help to protect the vehicle from the elements and reduce the amount of dust and dirt that accumulates. Many Cape homes are in areas with considerable evergreen tree coverage. The material that falls from these trees (especially sap) can prove extremely difficult to clean, especially if you keep the car parked in the same spot for long periods.

Wash the car regularly

A good wash every week or two will go a long way in keeping your car looking its best. If you are not inclined to wash your own car while on vacation, there are several terrific carwashes that do professional-grade work here on the Cape. While you’re doing this, consider spending a little extra to have the interior of the car cleaned. The process includes vacuum and shampoo and can make a remarkable difference, particularly for cars that accumulate sand from the beach. A cheap and quick way to substitute for the interior clean is to purchase a small hand-held electric vacuum and give your interior the once-over weekly.

Use a sealant or wax coating

Depending on where you bring your car to be washed, you might consider having the finish sealed or waxed. When I was growing up, my father washed and waxed his car and taught me how to do it. From that experience, I learned that I would pay someone else to do the job as soon as I had two nickles to rub together! All joking aside, a simple layer of wax has a remarkable ability to repel salt and sand. Sealants entail a more involved process, but I highly recommend it for cars that ‘live’ on Cape Cod all year. A considerable amount of rust and corrosion can be prevented from one coat of sealant per year.

Now that you know how to protect your car from the elements, it’s important to take care of it by washing and waxing it on a regular basis.
